“Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya” PLOT & IMAGES

We meet Aryan in Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya. He is a bright robotics engineer who works for Robotex, his aunt’s business. When his aunt extends an invitation for him to visit the USA, he meets Sifra, her creature, who seems and behaves like a human. After discovering Sifra is a robot, Aryan falls in love with her. Broken-hearted, he goes back to India and consents to marrying someone else. But he chooses to test Sifra in India, which causes havoc on their wedding day as Sifra breaks down. In the end, Aryan stops her and understands that although Sifra appears human, she is not truly one. The film closes on a positive note by implying that innovations like Sifra might still require improvement.

To the dismay of his family, the protagonist of the drama is introduced and declares his refusal to be married. The protagonist is a software developer who, bizarrely, is shown to oversee AI testing based on the code created by his coworkers. This is the only family he doesn’t have. Chalo is livable! The narrative then centers on his travel to the US, where he meets a female and develops an intimate relationship with her. This is prior to his discovery that she is, in reality, a robot. Even for an IT/Robotics Engineer, it is incomprehensible or utterly nonsensical that a human might become intimately involved with a robot without realizing it. Despite the fact that the love narrative is continually devoid of feeling, I would still argue that there are some comedy in the first hour.

The first hour of the show is enjoyable, but the proceedings are predictable—still faulty, in my opinion. Because the writing did not make it clear to me, I was not entirely convinced as to why the protagonist had fallen utterly in love with a computer. Unlike the characters in Her, he wasn’t depressed or experiencing rejection from all the girls he encountered. The only justification for this was that, after an hour, there was a watchable Rom-Com that went into unbearable area.

When the entire family factor enters the picture in the second hour, everything completely falls apart. To put things in perspective, the entire drama would be reduced to a relatively standard Rom-Com if I were to remove the film’s AI aspect from the second hour. My argument is that the second hour was merely a succession of incidents until the final act was revived, which at least did demonstrate spark while being badly staged. The AI and its ensuing chaos did little to improve the experience.

And it just made me angry to consider the possibilities that the literature could have explored with the idea of artificial intelligence. The screenplay served as a master class in how to construct popular films without sacrificing substance. I should also mention that, although Maddock, as a production company, chooses intriguing subjects for their films, there is an executional problem that needs to be fixed (regardless of the movie’s outcome).

Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya, starring Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon, hit theaters on Friday. Following a respectable opening day of Rs 6.70 crore at the box office, the movie saw an almost 40% increase on the second day. Industry tracker Sacnilk reports that on Saturday, the romantic comedy made Rs 9.50 crore. The movie has already earned a total of Rs 16.20 crore. On Saturday, the movie’s Hindi occupancy rate was 22.16% overall.
