Hwang penned the story in 2009, but he was unable to find a production firm to finance it. It wasn’t until 2019 that Netflix showed interest in the idea as part of an effort to increase the amount of international programming it offered.

Official announcements of a second season and Squid Game: The Challenge, a reality competition series, were made in June 2022. The second season’s filming started in July 2023 and is scheduled to premiere in 2024.

Created and primarily written by Peter Morgan, The Crown is a historical drama television series produced by Left Bank Pictures and Sony Pictures Television for Netflix. Dahmer was diagnosed with psychotic disorder, schizotypal personality disorder, and borderline personality disorder (BPD), yet during his trial, it was determined that he was legally sane. On February 17, 1992, he was sentenced to fifteen terms of life imprisonment after it was found that he had committed fifteen of the sixteen homicides in Wisconsin. Dahmer was later given a sixteenth life sentence for a 1978 homicide that he had committed in Ohio.

Christopher Scarver, a fellow prisoner at the Columbia Correctional Institution in Portage, Wisconsin, beat Dahmer to death on November 28, 1994.
