The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan concludes where the movie picks up. Agents of Gaston, the younger brother and presumed heir of King Louis XIII, subdue D’Artagnan and take him into custody. In exchange for freeing himself from captivity, D’Artagnan catches Gaston’s most dangerous goon, Comte de Chalais. He gives de Chalais instructions to take him to Constance’s jail cell, but unanticipatedly discovers Milady de Winter bound and seemingly beaten there. Accompanied by D’Artagnan, Milady spends the night in a secret location in the woodland. D’Artagnan is not amused by Milady’s attempts at seduction. She disappears, leaving him to sleep. The troops of de Chalais capture D’Artagnan once more, but he manages to flee. Athos pays a visit to his five-year-old kid in the family castle.
Following his escape from an attempted murder at the close of the first chapter, Louis XIII resolves to go to war with La Rochelle, a Protestant bastion on France’s west coast. With D’Artagnan and his companions, Captain Treville’s elite Musketeers squadron of the French army is dispatched to La Rochelle. D’Artagnan encounters Milady in the military camp, where she makes another attempt to entice him. D’Artagnan sees a fleur-de-lis branded on her shoulder during their kissing and undressing, and he is shocked to learn that this is the lady Athos informed him about in The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan. After Milady de Winter leaves the area, Athos finds out from D’Artagnan that his son’s mother, his former wife, may still be alive.
Captain de Treville leads a small troop of Musketeers in a risky nighttime attack to La Rochelle. Protestant rebels, who had evidently received orders from Gaston to notify Comte de Chalais of the impending raid, find them within the stronghold. After putting up a fierce battle, the Musketeers manage to escape with the aid of Hannibal, the commander of another French army battalion.

Following Milady into a woodland, Athos observes her as she meets Cardinal Richeliu in private. He finds out that Milady has been given the order to kill the Duke of Buckingham, whose backing is essential to the La Rochelle rebels’ military campaigns. Athos approaches Milady after Richelieu leaves, reminding him of their earlier romantic moments. Just when Milady is about to murder Athos, D’Artagnan and Aramis arrive and save him. Milady runs away.
When Cardinal Richeliu visits Queen Anne, he makes a vow to give Constance back, because he had her placed under custody. Constance is safe in England, the Queen informs D’Artagnan, under the Duke of Buckingham’s protection. Athos’ brother Benjamen, a prominent Protestant, is taken prisoner by Gaston’s troops and sentenced to watery death. In order to save his brother, Athos chooses to leave the French army. D’Artagnan and Aramis accompany him. They flee together to England.
To carry out the Duke of Buckingham’s murder, Milady departs for England. Constance, Buckingham’s visitor, recognizes Milady at the castle. She is apprehended and given the death penalty. Constance pays Milady a visit in captivity before she is hanged. Constance gives Milady a change of clothes out of sympathy for her plight as a young, attractive woman and allows her to go. Constance makes an attempt to clarify that she is not the one who is being executed, but rather in vain, as Milady’s executioners arrive. In the courtyard of the palace, she is hung. D’Artagnan arrives to Constance’s hanging a few seconds late with his buddies. They follow Milady along with Buckingham, who took advantage of the moment to set fire to the duke’s palace. D’Artagnan goes into the flaming structure to confront Milady.
The King’s court holds a treason trial for Captain de Treville. Arriving to present proof that Gaston conspired to plot against the King with the La Rochelle rebels is Aramis and D’Artagnan. Treville has been cleared. When Athos returns to his castle, he finds that his son has been kidnapped by an unidentified individual. The youngster discovers an earring that belonged to his wife lying on his bed.
