1. Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na (2008)

Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na (transl. Whether You Know Or Not) is a 2008 Indian Hindi-language coming-of-age romantic comedy film written and directed by Abbas Tyrewala, produced by Mansoor Khan and Aamir Khan under Aamir Khan Productions, with Ajay K. Bijli and Sanjeev K. Bijli of PVR Pictures serving as co-producers. The film stars Imran Khan (in his cinematic debut) and Genelia D’Souza, as well as Prateik Babbar, Manjari Fadnis, and Ayaz Khan.

Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na depicts the lives of two closest friends, Jai and Aditi. They refuse to develop romantic sentiments, but as they start dating various individuals, they understand how much they love each other. It was Tyrewala’s full-fledged screenwriting and directing debut. A. R. Rahman scored the film’s soundtrack, and Abbas Tyrewala wrote the lyrics.

At the 54th Filmfare prizes, Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na had 12 nominations, including Best Film, Best Supporting Actress (Patak Shah), and Best Supporting Actor (Babar), and won four prizes, including Best Male Debut (Imran Khan) and Best Music Director (Rahman).

2. I Hate Luv Storys (2010)

Punit Malhotra wrote and directed the 2010 Indian Hindi-language romantic comedy film I Hate Luv Stories, which was produced by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions and Ronnie Screwvala’s UTV Motion Pictures. The film stars Imran Khan and Sonam Kapoor. It was filmed in Mumbai and Queenstown, New Zealand. Vishal-Shekhar composed the film’s soundtrack, which has lyrics by Anvita Dutt Guptan, Kumaar, and Vishal himself.

3. Hasee Toh Phasee (2014)

Vinil Mathew directed the 2014 Indian Hindi-language romantic comedy-drama film Hasee Toh Phasee (transl. “If she smiles, she is trapped”), which was produced by Karan Johar, Anurag Kashyap, Vikramaditya Motwane, and Vikas Bahl under Dharma Productions and Phantom Films. Sidharth Malhotra and Parineeti Chopra star in the film, which also features Adah Sharma, Manoj Joshi, Sharat Saxena, and Neena Kulkarni.

Hasee Toh Phasee marks Malhotra’s reunion with Dharma Productions, as well as Chopra’s first project outside of her Yash Raj Films collaborations, and follows the story of Nikhil, a struggling businessman who, believing he is in love with Karishma, an actress he is engaged to, has to prove his worth to his father-in-law while grappling with the sudden return of his fiancee’s geeky sister, Meeta, whom he had an encounter with years ago, throwing all of them into uncharted water. Vishal-Shekhar composed the music, and Amitabh Bhattacharya and Kumaar wrote the words.

At the 60th Filmfare Awards, Hasee Toh Phasee received three nominations, including Best Lyricist (Bhattacharya for “Zehnaseeb”) and Best Male Playback Singer (Shekhar Ravjiani for the same song). It has subsequently become a cult favorite with audiences.

4. Jab We Met (2007)

Imtiaz Ali wrote and directed the 2007 Indian Hindi-language romantic comedy film Jab We Met, which was produced by Dhilin Mehta under his Shree Ashtavinayak Cine Vision company. The film stars Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor, with Tarun Arora, Saumya Tandon, and Dara Singh playing supporting roles.

The film, set primarily in Mumbai, Bhatinda, and Shimla, follows Aditya Kashyap, a devastated businessman who boards a train and meets Geet Dhillon, a talkative Punjabi girl. While they miss their train, Geet and Aditya embark on a journey together to her home, and what follows is a love that transforms them. Pritam composed the tunes, and Irshad Kamil wrote the lyrics.

The film garnered numerous accolades. At the 55th National Film Awards, Shreya Ghoshal won Best Female Playback Singer and Saroj Khan won Best Choreography for the song “Yeh Ishq Haaye”. At the 53rd Filmfare Awards, Jab We Met earned seven nominations and won two: Best Actress for Kareena Kapoor and Best Dialogue for Imtiaz Ali. Since its publication in 2007, Jab We Met has become a cult favorite.

5. Anyone but You (2023)

Anyone but You is a 2023 American romantic comedy film directed by Will Gluck, who also created the screenplay alongside Ilana Wolpert. It’s loosely based on William Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing and stars Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell. Alexandra Shipp, GaTa, Hadley Robinson, Michelle Hurd, Dermot Mulroney, Darren Barnet, Bryan Brown, and Rachel Griffiths round out the supporting cast.

Anyone But You premiered at the AMC Lincoln Square Theater on December 11, 2023, and was released theatrically in the United States by Sony Pictures Releasing on December 22, 2023. The film earned mixed reviews from critics and grossed $216 million worldwide.

6. Hum Tum (2004)

Kunal Kohli wrote and directed the 2004 Indian Hindi-language romantic comedy film Hum Tum (transl.: Me and You). It was produced by Aditya Chopra’s Yash Raj Films and is partially based on the English film When Harry Met Sally… (1989). Saif Ali Khan and Rani Mukerji star in the film, which also features Rishi Kapoor, Kirron Kher, Rati Agnihotri, and Jimmy Sheirgill. Hum Tum recounts the experiences of two people, Karan and Rhea, who cross paths on multiple times under varying situations.

Hum Tum is Mukerji’s third film with Yash Raj Films. The film includes several short animation sequences developed by Kathaa Animations, led by Prakash Nambiar, with special effects by Tata Elxsi. Sunil Patel handled the cinematography. Jatin-Lalit composed the music, and Prasoon Joshi wrote the lyrics.

The film garnered numerous accolades. Khan won Best Actor at the 52nd National Film Awards in 2005. Hum Tum garnered eight nominations and five awards at the 50th Filmfare Awards, including Best Director (Kohli), Best Actress (Mukherji), Best Comedian (Khan), Best Female Playback Singer (Alka Yagnik for “Hum Tum”), and Best Scene of the Year.

7. Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013)

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (YJHD) is a 2013 Indian Hindi-language coming-of-age romantic comedy-drama film directed by Ayan Mukerji and written by Mukerji and Hussain Dalal. It was edited by Akiv Ali and produced by Karan Johar under Dharma Productions. It stars Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone in their second film together after Bachna Ae Haseeno (2008), along with Kalki Koechlin and Aditya Roy Kapur.

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani is about two people, Naina and Bunny, who meet on a trekking trip. Naina falls in love with Bunny but does not express it. They soon drift away, but eventually reunite at a friend’s wedding. The film had a production budget of ₹40 crore and was shot in Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Paris, Mumbai, and Kashmir between March 2012 and January 2013. Pritam composed the score and melodies, while V. Manikandan handled the cinematography. Amitabh Bhattacharya and Kumaar wrote the lyrics for the songs. The film produced a blockbuster soundtrack, with all tracks topping the charts.

8. Date Night (2010)

Shawn Levy directs and produces Date Night, a 2010 American romantic comedy crime film written by Josh Klausner. Its cast includes Steve Carell, Tina Fey, Taraji P. Henson, Common, and Mark Wahlberg. The film follows a case of mistaken identity in New York City, which transforms a bored married couple’s effort at a beautiful and romantic evening into something more adventurous and hazardous.

Date Night debuted in New York City on April 6, 2010, and was released theatrically on April 9, 2010, by 20th Century Fox. It made $152.3 million on a $55 million budget.

9. No Reservations (2007)

Scott Hicks directed the 2007 romantic comedy-drama film No Reservations, which stars Catherine Zeta-Jones, Aaron Eckhart, and Abigail Breslin. Carol Fuchs’ screenplay is an adaptation of Sandra Nettelbeck’s original script, which served as the basis for the 2001 German film Mostly Martha. The plot revolves around a hard-edged chef whose life is turned upside down when she decides to take in her young niece following a tragic accident that killed her sister. The film stars Patricia Clarkson, Bob Balaban, and Jenny Wade, with supporting appearances from Brían F. O’Byrne, Lily Rabe, and Zoë Kravitz (in her first feature film).

Critics gave the film a mixed reaction, calling it “predictable and too melancholy for the genre”. No Reservations grossed $12 million in its first weekend in the United States and Canada on July 27, 2007, and went on to gross over $43 million domestically and over $92 million globally. Breslin received a nomination for a Young Artist Award for her performance.

10. Upgrade (2024)

Carlson Young directed Upgraded, a 2024 American romantic comedy film starring Camila Mendes, Archie Renaux, Thomas Kretschmann, Grégory Montel, Lena Olin, and Marisa Tomei.

Ana is an ambitious intern who aspires to work in the arts while also striving to impress her demanding boss Claire. When she is upgraded to first class on a business trip, she meets attractive Will, who misidentifies Ana as her boss–a white lie that sets off a luxurious sequence of events, romance, and opportunity, until her deception is exposed.

The film is a modern-day rendition of the classic fairytale “Cinderella” and will be released on Amazon Prime Video on February 9, 2024.
